L’Shana Tova

On this, the eve of Rosh Hashana 5778, I wish everyone a hearty L’Shana Tova.

May you have health, happiness and good fortune in the year ahead.

May you also:

  • Observe the holiday in the way you feel most spiritually nourished.
  • Catch up with folks you might not have seen since that last time you went to temple…about a year ago…if you know what I mean.
  • Appreciate how hard the Shofar blower is working. So, too, clergy.
  • Hum when you know the tune, but not the words…do it your way.
  • Indulge in kugel and chopped liver and schmaltz, tzimmes, brisket, gefilte fish and challah without (or with if you want to be that way) raisins and apples. Lots of apples with honey.
  • Wear your stretchy dress or slacks or skirts.
  • Don’t worry about the spilled wine, or the dropped bowl of matzo ball soup…it’s all good.

And for the entirety of 5778 may you:

  • Surround yourself with people you genuinely like. Enjoy their company.  Share in their joys. Be there for them in their sorrows.
  • Achieve whatever goal you set, no matter how small.
  • Find a book, an actual book, that you cannot put down. And when you are done, pass it along.
  • Try something that scares you and see if you live to tell the tale.
  • Do whatever you can to ensure that you laugh every single day…even (particularly, actually) if it is at your expense.
  • End each day considering the high, the low and what you did for someone else…even if it was just holding the door.
  • Wear the jeans that are comfortable, not the ones that are the size you want to be in.
  • Same for shoes.
  • Ladies: have your eye brows and lashes tinted…game changer!
  • Men: call your mom…and if that is not a possibility, call someone else’s.
  • Call, email, IM or text a friend that you have lost touch with just to let them know you are thinking about them. Chances are good they are thinking about you, too.
  • Take a deep breath, count to ten, bite your tongue, resist the send button and don’t respond to anything without allowing it to be sorted out in your head first.
  • Do something adult-like that you’ve managed to avoid: colonoscopy, estate plan, dental implant anyone?
  • Even if you think someone is a total asshole shithead fucker, don’t name call. Think it all you want, but keep your mouth shut.
  • If someone is injured or ill: don’t tell them to let you know if they need anything. Figure out what they need for yourself and just do it.
  • Cut everyone some slack: we are all pedaling as fast as we can, climbing up hill both ways and flying solo and/or blind about something.
  • Look out, stick up and celebrate the underdogs, because at some point, it could be you.
  • Kiss your partner. A lot.  And not just a peck on the cheek.  Make out with them.
  • Turn the radio up, open the windows and the sunroof and sing. Even better when you do it with your kid.
  • Don’t pressure your kids this school year. Trust me; most of them are under more than enough pressure already.  As long as they try, care little about their grades.
  • When someone asks you why are upset, answer them. And if you don’t, consider yourself on your own.
  • Move on: most bad stuff cannot be undone. Choose whether you are going to let it fester and make you crazy or if it is time to archive it in the book of your history.
  • And finally, and as always: you can be a boy, a girl, a dog or a Martian, but please don’t ever be an asshole.
